GREAT BLUE HERON
Ardea herodias Linnaeus
Protected by U.S. Migratory Bird Treaty Act
Great blue herons are probably my favorite wading species. As Florida’s tallest wading bird, the great blue heron takes a commanding view of its habitat. Standing 4 feet high, with a wingspan of over 6 feet, these big beautiful herons are equally at home in freshwater or marine shorelines.
Great blues are legendary hunters. And pretty much anything is on the menu—including fish, snakes, rodents and even small birds. With a massive bill over five inches long, they can actually spear their prey. My original blue heron painting “Ghost Of The Mangroves” is 36 x 36 inches on canvas, portraying a great blue heron patrolling a coastal estuary.
